Two Chinese cars among the top scorers in this year's Euro NCAP crash tests

THE European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) has published its 2021 report. At the end of this year, 33 models were subjected to the famous crash tests, 22 of which received the maximum five-star rating, a score that guarantees very good safety on board. For the first time, two models from China have fully met the European safety criteria.

In detail, it is the Subaru Outback that gets the best scores (including an impressive 95% on Safety Assist). Also on the honor roll are the Polestar 2, the Genesis G80, the Nissan Qashqai and the Mercedes-EQ EQS.

But the major news this year is the presence of two Chinese manufacturers, both awarded five stars for their SUVs, the Lynk & Co 01 and the NIO ES8. Belonging to the Geely Group, Lynk & Co is a brand that has just arrived in Europe. Its first SUV, the Lynk & Co 01, is built on the same base as the Volvo XC40, which partly explains its good marks in the various Euro NCAP crash tests. The small hybrid SUV gets its best score (96%) for adult occupant protection.

For its part, the NIO ES8 is an electric SUV that stands out for the quality of its safety aids (92%), such as its autonomous emergency braking system and other features designed to prevent accidents. This is the first time that cars developed in China have achieved such scores.

On the other hand, the latest version of the Renault ZOE does not get a single star. Indeed, while the small versatile electric vehicle has certainly seen improvements in terms of battery, it's a different story when it comes to safety.

With the new requirements of the Euro NCAP protocol, the results are low, especially because of the lack of accident avoidance technology.

Note that since 2020, Euro NCAP has also published  a series of tests specifically dedicated to assisted driving. This year, the BMW iX3 is the model with the best-performing assisted driving system on the European market.

The German SUV has a set of extremely powerful sensors as standard, which makes its driving assistance system particularly safe when drivers are not able to react to dangerous situations themselves.
